Global trends towards supporting 24-hour activity
Cities around the world are increasingly recognizing the value of the nighttime economy, prompting a growing trend toward formalizing entities dedicated to economic activity between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Amsterdam pioneered this movement by appointing the first night mayor in 2014, inspiring other cities to explore roles and offices that can support late-night life. A night mayor is an official, often appointed or elected, who serves as a liaison between city government, residents, and nighttime businesses to help coordinate and advocate for policies that support a vibrant and safe night economy. Depending on their scale and needs, cities can establish a night mayor position, create commissions or dedicated offices, or partner with grassroots organizations to develop and implement nighttime strategies and policies.
